Darbys falls residents stuck with tank water, homes under rubble
(8:40 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 26) -- A crowd of residents gathered at the scene of the Chevron refinery near San Pedro in Camarillo on Saturday night to watch a news report broadcast on local TV about a chemical leak into the nearby community. Residents who had been evacuated from the area said the air was filled with a foul smell and an eerie silence. Authorities said they did not know what caused the leak. "It is very important that the people are protected.... There has been an air strike on our house," said the woman, identified only as "Sandra." "It was like a big earthquake, there was a huge explosion. It feels like a nuclear explosion. There is so much smoke, so many explosions." She said when the explosion happened a small fire broke out. People inside the house told CNN affiliate El Rey about the explosion and gas leaks inside their homes. "It's terrifying," said Nancy, a retired teacher who lives two blocks from the Chevron site. "We haven't had gas since 2008." The oil company told CNN it has detected the chemical hydrogen sulphide but has not found it in the water supply and it has begun a series of tests to ensure the water is safe to drink.
In another scene just yards from the Chevron site on the north side of town, the ground was covered in black ash and the air was filled with black smoke.
In an email from refinery executive Dave Anderson, he said Chevron employees working at the site saw the fire.
"Our employees saw the gas well explosion at the Chevron refinery and the thick black smoke around it. We immediately deployed firefighting efforts," he wrote.
A few miles away, two residents told CBS affiliate KGTV their house was destroyed by the explosion. They were evacuated with their infant daughter after they went to find out what had happened.
Another resident of the small Camarillo-area community of Mocambo, Jose Rodriguez, told KGTV he felt lucky the chemical wasn't found in the town's drinking water.
"It is really bad. It's really hard to look at," Rodriguez said. "It's so sad to have to do something like this."
"I am just asking for the residents of the community to be patient while their house is rebuilt," he added. "It is really important that we get some help for this community, and I think the government's helping."
The area where the oil site exploded has two gas stations. Chevron estimates that the spill was caused by a leaky leak pipe.
